A disclosure that a Bronx charter school has been rewarding its teachers with all-expenses-paid trips to the Caribbean is opening up a debate on the appropriate use of money in public education.

For now, the South Bronx resident, running a write-in campaign for the presidency on his own party line, travels in a more quotidian fashion: stumping via Greyhound and Amtrak.

Published: December 7, 2007The Department of Education said yesterday that it would close two elementary schools — Public School 156, the Benjamin Banneker School, in the Bronx, and Public School 304, Casimir Pulaski, in Brooklyn — after both received F’s on the school report cards released last month. The announcement brings to 10 the number of schools scheduled to close so far, with a handful of additional closing announcements expected by early next week. The schools will close at the end of the school year.
