FEDS’ WARNING SHOT
By SUSAN EDELMAN and BRUCE GOLDING
July 6, 2008 —
GARDASIL – a new cervical-cancer vaccine heavily marketed to young girls in ubiquitous ads on TV and in movie theaters – is under investigation for possible links to paralysis, seizures, and 18 deaths.
Federal health officials have logged 8,000 “adverse events” in girls and women injected with the Merck & Co. vaccine introduced two years ago, more than 500 of them from New York.
And lawyers last month filed the first two claims on behalf of girls with ailments blamed on Gardasil under a federal program to compensate victims of vaccine-caused illness, The Post has learned.
Both girls got the injections at their middle schools.
One is Jesalee Parsons, now 15, of Oklahoma, who began vomiting the day she got a Gardasil shot and developed pancreatitis, her claim says.
“It makes me mad because they’re saying how great it is, but they never mention how many people have been hurt by it,” Jesalee told The Post.
Healthy all her life, her family says, Jesalee has been hospitalized on and off for more than a year. She restricts her diet, takes pain pills and misses many school days.
“I’m pretty sick all the time,” she said.
The other claim was filed for Jessica Vega of Nevada, who came down with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, an immune-system disorder, at age 14 – a week after her second Gardasil shot.
Thirty others have reported the syndrome after getting the vaccine.
JESSICA’S mom, Rhonda Vega, says the girl’s lower legs and arms were paralyzed, but she’s learned to walk again. “Protecting girls against cervical cancer is a fabulous thing, but if this is what’s going to happen, they need to research it more,” she said.
In Florida, the mother of 13-year-old Brittany LeClaire said her daughter suffered headaches and lethargy after a Gardasil shot last Aug. 13. On Sept. 2, Brittany’s left leg became paralyzed. After months on a walker, she limps.
Her pediatrician “highly recommended” the vaccination, mom Christina Bell said. “He told me it was a cancer preventative. I thought it was the right thing to do. You see it advertised on TV every 15 minutes.”
Brittany’s case is one of six being prepared for filing by Boston vaccine lawyer Kevin Conway. He said other cases include “paralysis, seizures and brain damage.”
Gardasil was licensed by the Food and Drug Administration in June 2006 for females ages 9 to 26. Sold worldwide, it’s been given to more than 8 million US girls and women, Merck says.
The vaccine is aimed at warding off strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can lead to cancer. The vaccinations cost a total $360.
Securities and Exchange Commission documents show Merck made $1.5 billion in Gardasil sales last year.
ONE doctor who helped conduct clinical trials on Gardasil told The Post the vaccine has been aggressively marketed to girls too young to need it.
“There’s a huge push for giving this to girls 11 and 12 years of age,” said Dr. Diane Harper of Dartmouth Medical School. “There’s no hurry. You can give it to someone who is 20, 25 or 30 and still have the same level of protection.”
The Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, run by the FDA and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, has collected thousands of reports of health problems after Gardasil shots.
The fatalities include:
* A 17-year-old New York girl who collapsed and died on Feb. 22 this year, two days after the last of three Gardasil injections. An autopsy could not pinpoint the cause, but doctors suspect a heart-rhythm disorder.
* An 11-year-old who suffered a heart attack in May 2007, three days after a Gardasil shot. The nurse who reported it said a doctor blamed it on “an anaphylactic [severe allergic] reaction to Gardasil.” The feds could not confirm the case.
* A 12-year-old girl with no prior medical problems who died in her sleep on Oct. 6, 2007, three weeks after a Gardasil shot.
DR. John Iskander, the CDC’s acting director for immunization safety, said a review of 10 confirmed deaths found no common thread. Officials “concluded to the degree of certainty possible” that Gardasil wasn’t to blame.
“It’s tragic that young, apparently healthy people, do die,” Iskander said.
But he added that doctors hold special meetings weekly to review new cases, and compare them to prior ones.
Fainting is the main symptom linked to Gardasil, he said.
Merck spokeswoman Kelley Dougherty said the company “actively monitors” reports of side effects.
“An event report does not mean that a causal relationship between an event and vaccination has been established – just that the event occurred after vaccination,” she said.
A Post analysis of adverse- event reports filed through April 30 found that about 20 percent followed injections of Gardasil, plus up to seven other vaccines at the same time – including shots to prevent flu, chicken pox, hepatitis and tetanus. Almost 6,300 cases involved Gardasil alone.
Under a federal law passed in the late 1980s, victims of vaccines may file a claim under the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program, but cannot sue the pharmaceutical.
Last year, the government added HPV to a list of vaccines, including polio, hepatitis and measles, granted immunity from suit.
If victims prove a vaccine likely caused injuries, the program pays a maximum $250,000 for death. The average payment for injury has been $1 million.

Didn’t we all see this coming? I love how the pharm lobbyists were pushing Congress to MANDATE this shot for the nation’s women. What happened to good old fashioned thorough testing? Money, money, money. I will NEVER get this shot, or this kind of shot, for my children. The “medical marvels” we keep coming up with are not worth it.

$360 for a vaccine for something you’ll most lykly never even get…. and you have a chance of getting things just as bad as what it supposedly prevents… which it doesn’t even prevent completely…. that’s incredibly pointless.

My daughter got all 3 of the shots and has suffered health problems. This vaccine is poisoning young girls.
If you have suffered side effects from Gardasil and want to share your story, please go to Lets Talk about Gardasil group on Yahoo.

Which politicians in New York are pushing for this to be mandated, so I know not to vote for them?

jessica ericzon was like a daughter to me,in the prime of her life,17 years old. Happy, healthy,so full of life -she was an inspiration to us all,she made life fun. For Lisa and i to come home and find her dead on the bathroom floor was the most horrific thing any mother could ever go through. A mother to lose her only daughter. The next day i got online and google searched a number of things like heart attacks in teens, aneurysms, and Gardasil. WOW! Gardasil read like a book of horrors. I started copying all the pertinent info and highlighting what i knew were facts. When i showed this info to Jessies mom her jaw hit the floor, her heart sank and thus our crusade to end this Gardasil killing spree began. To find out that the FDA fast tracked the drug for approval before the testing was even finished. To find out that HPV doesn’t even cause cervical cancer and the FDA publicly announced it in writing in 2003 then turned around and stated just the opposite. To find out that what little testing was done was totally bogus and the drug comanies lied and the government followed along makes me wonder who really runs our country. To find out that they actually are trying to tell us it may be mandatory to get the vaccine much less anything else just infuriates me as a proud american. To find out that the governments tracking system on drugs approved for marketing to the entire population is a lame, passive, poor excuse. Look at Vioxx,60,000 people died or got deathly ill before the drug was pulled-(60,000).When one mother asked if her doctor could report her daughters adverse reactions to the FDA VAERS system he had never even heard of it. It should be mandatory for doctors to report every incident. It should be mandatory for doctors to warn of side affects. It should be mandatory to pre screen every patient before administering any drug or vaccine. People keep telling me the doctors aren’t at fault here, thats BULL! They need to get off their asses, quit thinking they are GOD and speak up,investigate, call for change, protect there patients, treat every girl like it was there own daughter. If this happened to there daughter it would be a whole different ball game. This is only a drop in the bucket, the facts keep coming out,the lies and payoffs are getting exposed, the people will be heard-AND THATS A PROMISE!

I am the mother of a daughter who died on Feb. 22, 2008, just 2 days after her 3rd Gardasil vaccine. After her 2nd vaccination Jessie started having severe headaches, muscle and joint aches. She was always tired and dizzy, she even told her best friend she felt like she was dieing. I can’t stress to mothers enough, please don’t allow your daughter’s to have the vaccine, it’s a killer and no one will tell me that my daughters death was just a coincidence, that she would have died anyway. That is the biggest cop out ever. Jessie was the happiest healthiest teenager around. Her autopsy report found no cause for her death, but I know. GARDASIL KILLS. Jessie’s mom. Lisa

My daughter had 2 of the injections more than a year ago. She’s been having problems off and on for about a year now and just recently became very ill and has not been abled to attend school for the past 6 weeks and no one knows what is wrong with her or what caused it. After reading these articles, I’m wondering if Gardasil has something to do with it. She vomits up nearly everything she eats, diarrhea every day, sharp abdominal pains, severe headaches and dizziness, etc. She’s had bloodwork, ultrasounds, CT scans, the works, and they still don’t know what’s wrong. In between 2 dr appts. she lost 36 pounds… in 13 days! She’s not losing so much weight anymore, but she’s still sick. Can anyone help us?

I have, or had, a healthy 15 year old daughter that collapsed after a basketball game one week after her second shot.(02/05/09) She went into some sort of attack where all her muscles locked, she couldn’t breathe, and has memory loss. She had fainted two days earlier and has had one dizzy spell since her attack. She also experiences tingling in her hands and arms and nauseu. After researching this drug I am convinced her health and the drug are linked. We have had EKGs, CAT scans, blood work and now are continuing on with a nuerologists. All initial testing has come back positive so far. It has been 6 days since her attack and she is just now starting to act liek her old self. She still says all of her muscles really hurt. We don’t know what to expect but will keep testing until we figure out what happened. We are not leaving this in our doctor’s hands even though she said she would help. In my heart I am convinced this drug is poison and feel like a dolt letting both my girls get the shots…but that will not stop me from making sure other girls know the risks!!!!! If we can prove a link I will stop at nothing to get this drug pulled from the market. It will take all of us joining together, sharing info and staying in touch. God Speed—–

my 11 year old daughter had her 1st gardasil shot on Mon. – she was sick within 12 hours (high fever, headache, arm and leg pain and weakness). No one wants to connect it to the vaccine. Went back to physician on Wed. Flu test -negative, strep test negative, blood work all normal. I know it is related and we will not get the other two in the series.
