A Manhattan Sequoia, Not So Giant

A giant sequoia, 20 feet tall and donated by a nursery in Oregon, was planted at Morningside Park.

It’s one in a million (which isn’t as cool as one in 8 million).

A giant sequoia — which, at 20 feet tall, isn’t really so giant, and which has limited growth prospects, as will be explained below — was planted in Morningside Park on Tuesday as part of the MillionTreesNYC project. Of the estimated 5.2 million trees in the city, there are only a smattering of giant sequoias. (The others are in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the New York Botanical Garden, and Wave Hill in the Bronx).

The new tree will be part of the expanding arboretum in Morningside Park which started in 2000 in a section focused on evergreen trees.
