Barbara Margolis, Prisoners’ Advocate, Dies at 79

Barbara Margolis, a longtime volunteer in New York City jails who 20 years ago founded Fresh Start, a widely praised training program that brings the city’s finest chefs to Rikers Island to train inmates in culinary arts, and then helps those inmates find restaurant jobs upon release, died on July 3 in Manhattan.

Long active in civic affairs, Mrs. Margolis was the New York City commissioner of protocol under Mayor Edward I. Koch. In that capacity, she was the city’s official greeter, welcoming visiting dignitaries like Pope John Paul II and Diana, Princess of Wales, for an annual salary of $1. (On New Year’s Eve 1977, Mayor Koch was sworn in for his first term at the home of Mrs. Margolis and her husband, David I. Margolis, who became one of the mayor’s close advisers.)

TYPEWRITE & WRONG

NYPD ‘WASTES’ $1M ON RELICS

By JEREMY OLSHAN

The city is plunking down nearly $1 million on typewriters for its keystroke cops.

That’s right — typewriters.

Despite the adoption of high-tech equipment that can read license plates from the air and detect radiological events before they happen, manual and electric typewriters continue to be used throughout the NYPD — and they won’t be phased out anytime soon, officials told The Post.

In fact, just last year, the city signed a $982,269 contract with New Jersey-based Swintec for the purchase of thousands of new manual and electric typewriters over the next three years — some of which retail for as much as $649 apiece.

And last month, the city signed a $99,570 deal with Afax Business Machines in Manhattan for the maintenance of its existing Brother, Panasonic and IBM Selectric typewriters.

Man Killed by an Angry Driver, Police Say
Published: July 13, 2009

A man crossing a Bronx street with his 6-year-old son was killed on Sunday by a driver who went on a wild 20-block ride and plowed into more than half a dozen cars, the police said.

Witnesses told the police that the driver had gotten into an argument in a parking lot at East Gun Hill Road and Allerton Avenue in the Baychester section. The witnesses said the man sped out of the lot, slamming into another car and shoving it into a second parked vehicle.

He headed westbound on East Gun Hill Road, the police said, and 10 blocks away, at Knapp Street, he hit the father, whose name was withheld.

The child was not hurt, the police said.

The police said the driver, whom they did not identify, drove 10 more blocks and hit six more vehicles before he was arrested.

“BABY CARROTS”

Baby Carrots

The following is information from a farmer who grows and packages carrots for IGA, METRO,  LOBLAWS, etc

The small cocktail (baby) carrots you buy in
small plastic bags are made using the larger crooked or deformed carrots which are put through a machine
which cuts and shapes them into cocktail carrots – most people probably know this already.

What you may not know and should know is the following:

Once the carrots are cut and shaped into cocktail
carrots they are dipped in a solution of water and chlorine
in order to preserve them. (this is the same chlorine used in your pool)..

Since they do not have their skin or natural protective covering, they give them a higher dose of chlorine.

You will notice that once you keep these carrots
in your refrigerator for a few days, a white covering will
form on the carrots. This is the chlorine which resurfaces.

At what cost do we put our health at risk to have esthetically pleasing vegetables?

Chlorine is a very well-known carcinogen, which causes Cancer.. I thought this was worth passing on.

Pass it on to as many people as possible in hopes
of informing them where these carrots come from and how they are processed.

I used to buy those baby carrots for vegetable dips.

I know that I will never buy them again!!!!

Confirmed by Snopes.com  Baby Carrots …. Are baby carrots made from deformed full-sized carrots that have been soaked in chlorine. — Contaminated Food –
