Quinn a parking ‘valet’ for Mike
|
By DAVID SEIFMAN, City Hall Bureau Chief |
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who many insiders believed was secretly supporting Mayor Bloomberg’s re-election, did a special favor for Hizzoner before Election Day, The Post has learned. |
Quinn (D-Manhattan) stalled a bill giving motorists a five-minute grace period at electronic parking meters so the mayor wouldn’t be forced to veto it and earn the wrath of voters, sources said. “Quinn held it as a favor to the mayor,” said one insider. |
Quinn made a late, largely insignificant endorsement of Democratic nominee Bill Thompson for mayor and many insiders believed she really wanted Bloomberg, with whom she has a good relationship, back for a third term. |
| The grace period would apply only at muni-meters, which issue paper receipts that motorists display on dashboards to indicate how much parking time they’ve purchased. |

| THEATER REVIEW | ‘SAVANNAH BLACK & BLUE’ |
A Woman’s Tough Climb to the Police Force
|
The lot of police officers isn’t easy, and for black women on the force it’s much harder. That would be the view of “Savannah Black & Blue,” the tale of one such officer in the New York Police Department. The playwright, Raymond Jones, knows the milieu. According to press materials for this Negro Ensemble Company production, Mr. Jones, a lieutenant in the Bronx district attorney’s office, interviewed a number of women in the department for research. |
Directed by the troupe’s artistic director, Charles Weldon, the play traces the ascent of Savannah (Ciera Payton) from a childhood in the projects — raised by a flinty mother (Thyais Welch) and feisty grandmother (a funny Kimberlyn Crawford), and adored by her dad (Tomike Lee Ogugua), a feckless bookie — to a post in the narcotics division. |

Verizon: How Much Do You Charge Now?
|
Starting next week, Verizon will double the early-termination fee for smartphones. That is, if you get a BlackBerry, Android or similar phone from Verizon, and you decide to switch phones before your two-year contract is up, you’ll be socked with a $350 penalty (it used to be $175). |
This fee drops slowly over time ($10 a month), but after two years, it’s still $110. If the premise of the early-termination fee is to help Verizon recoup its original cost of the phone (see my analysis here http://bit.ly/pOkXz), shouldn’t the fee go down to zero at the end of your contract? |
This move doesn’t help Verizon’s reputation for steep pricing and aggressive gouging. |

Does Hollywood Still Have a Brown Paper Bag Test?
When it comes to colorism, “Precious” is still the same old, same old.

I’ve been accused a time or two of being a little too color-struck, reading too deeply into decisions that could have been made based on pure happenstance. Yes, I rooted for the Jiggaboos in Spike Lee’s School Daze, and sure, I happen to find Idris Elba a helluva lot more attractive than Chris Brown, but I am no colorist. I wish, however, that I could say the same for Hollywood executives who cast black movies. |
Call it overanalyzing, but is it a coincidence that Precious’ dark-skinned mother is physically and verbally abusive, her dark-skinned father is a drug addict who rapes her, and the main character herself is a dark-skinned 16-year-old mother of two? Meanwhile, the teacher, social worker and nurse who uplift and bring positivity into her life are all light-skinned. |
