YANKEE APPLICANTS WILLING TO WORK FOR PEANUTS
YANKEE APPLICANTS WILLING TO WORK FOR PEANUTS
By MATTHEW NESTEL
January 25, 2009 –
More than 2,000 hawker hopefuls lined up at the new Yankee Stadium yesterday hoping to catch food-service jobs at the Bombers’ new venue.
Laid-off waiters, recent college grads, and even former Yankee Stadium employees – who have to reapply for their old jobs – attended a job fair at the stadium in hopes of landing one of about 1,000 vending jobs available.
Howard Hopkins, 52, a head waiter at Tavern on the Green in Central Park until getting laid off last month, was excited about the possibility of working at another New York icon – as long as it’s not Shea.
“I’m a die-hard Yankee fan,” he said. “I live right by Shea Stadium, but I hate the Mets so much that if they were having a job fair, I wouldn’t go.”
A former waiter for Yankee owner George Steinbrenner’s private dining room, John Guercio, 80, of Staten Island, waited in line all day to reclaim his job.
“I can still move!” he said.
Two recent college grads from Toledo, Ohio, who were striking out with their other job interviews, hoped to make the cut with the Yanks.
“I’m scared I’ll have to leave town,” said Kevin Little, 22, who moved to New York last week and is crashing on his friend’s couch. “It’s bad here, but it’s worse there.”
