Our talent search for “the best of the best” jazz vocalists
Jazzmobile, Inc. is pleased to announce the sixth annual “Jazzmobile Jazz Vocal Competition.” Jazz singers, who want to join in the fun and compete to become “the best of the best,” are invited to audition to be a part of the competition.
Auditions will be held on Thursday, July 2, 2009 from 3:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Harlem School of the Arts, 645 St. Nicholas Avenue, NY, NY 10030 (between 141st & 145th Street). (If required, a second day of auditions will be scheduled for July 3rd).
After a successful audition, the top scorers are chosen to showcase their talents to a live audience at Harlem’s Alhambra Ballroom on Monday, July 27th. Winners are selected by a panel of industry professional judges that have included among others – Master Jazz pianist, educator, composer, and founder of Jazzmobile, Billy Taylor; Drummer, bandleader and composer T.S. Monk; and Jazz singer and educator Gloria Lynne.
Judging Criteria:
* Ability to sing in the style of a jazz standard
* Originality
* Phrasing
* Jazz Style
* Intonation
* Improvisation
* Stage presence

WKCR-FM New York is presentong a radio festival devoted to jazz drummer and NEA Jazz Master Roy Haynes. WKCR will be airing his music continuously from Sunday, January 11th at 8:00 am until Friday, January 23rd at 9:00 pm, a total of 301 hours.

Seemingly ageless, Roy Haynes has played the drums from the bebop days of the 1940s to the present day with the same restless energy. Haynes has remained fresh in his outlook and in his thirst for collaborating with younger artists and those who play in challenging styles, as is shown in his work with such disparate artists as Roland Kirk, Danilo Pérez, and Pat Metheny. He also has been a favorite sideman for any number of artists because of his crisply distinctive drumming style.
