Health Department Program Helps Prevent Infant Deaths by Providing Cribs to Low-Income Families
New Yorkers can give a crib to a family in need by donating to the Fund for Public Health in New York; Goal set to help 250 families this holiday season
Health Department will host online Q&A on baby health and safety at www.nyc.gov/health
Cribs for KidsEvery baby needs a crib to sleep safely, but some New York City infants are lacking cribs this holiday season, simply because their families can’t afford them. The Health Department’s Cribs for Kids program provides cribs at no-cost to families in need. Outreach workers contact new parents in eligible ZIP codes in the South Bronx, Harlem and Central Brooklyn to set up a home visit and see whether they need cribs or other assistance. The Health Department has provided cribs for more than 1,600 babies since May 2007, but many more families need help.

Election Night in Harlem
Harlem: Red, White and New
By Martin Johnson
From Sylvia’s to Starbucks, Election Night on 125th street.
Getty ImagesNov. 5, 2008–It isn’t often that you get to choose where to watch history in the making, but Election Night was that rare event that you could pick your perch.
I chose Harlem as my perch. I don’t live there, but I work there once a week, tending to the cheese program at a wine bar—yes, a cheese program at a wine bar. You see, Harlem 2008 is different from the Harlem of the Renaissance and Harlem as the locus of black nationalism in the early ’70s. My life wouldn’t be the same without those Harlems. I read the Renaissance writers, and my first Gil Scott-Heron album contained the poem, “Small Talk at 125th and Lenox,” which made me go there 30 years ago in my first week as a New York City resident. Punany is more than a show. It is a movement that has ignited an international conversation about Love & Sexual Health. Punany is a sensual theatrical science that can foster a commitment to public health as no other public service campaign ever has. The Punany project spearheaded what has now become known as the Black Sexual Revolution, which uses poetry to promote health/sexual safety and AIDS awareness. The Punany Project seeks to educate through entertainment, employing new and innovative methods to deliver complex messages.
Our audience members are adult students in a college of sexual health improvement. Since the project began in 1995, The Punany Poets’ work has found favor among millions of television viewers, literary critics and scholars. But enough about us, you will know for yourself. We encourage you to sit back, relax, and enjoy the show!

June 19, 2008Thirty-four members of two drug-dealing organizations who shared one city housing project were arrested yesterday morning for selling crack cocaine.
Manhattan North Narcotics captain Donald Boller said the two groups “had an agreement” to split in half the Lincoln Houses territory, which extends from 132nd to 135th street, between Fifth and Park avenues. Madison Avenue runs through the middle of the housing project, and served as the dealers’ property line.
